It may be what you’d expect to see at a high end health spa, but aromatherapy and guided meditation is also part of the healing care program at ProMedica Hickman Cancer Center. The program aims to provide free holistic services for cancer patients and their caregivers for up to two years after treatment is complete.
“When you get a cancer diagnosis and you’re in treatment, oftentimes people think there’s no control; things are out of control,” explained Deb Reis, RN, MSN, Coordinator, Healing Care Program. “So we want to let them know that there are tools they can use to regain some sense of balance…and a little bit of peace as they are going through this process.”
Melissa Growden, a cancer survivor, found aromatherapy especially helpful during and after cancer treatment. Lavender helped her sleep while peppermint was critical to offsetting nausea and regaining her appetite.
Edward Burge, a cancer survivor who has benefited from healing touch, said the Healing Care Program helped him immediately. “After the very first session, all the anger was gone, all the frustration was gone; I began to heal,” he said.

While the sessions may provide immediate benefits, Reis says it’s important that patients learn to use these techniques on their own at home.
“We’re helping the person truly know what it is to be in a place of peace and balance in their mind, in their body and in their spirit.”
