A good night’s rest is about more than getting beauty sleep. It helps your body reset, recover, rebuild, and relax. Matt Roth, MD, a family and sports medicine doctor with ProMedica Physicians, says that half of Americans function in a sleep-deprived state. The average person in the United States gets 6.9 hours of sleep per night, while the recommended amount of sleep is 8-9 hours.

Being sleep deprived can lead to fatigue and low productivity and increase your risk of certain conditions, such as diabetes, depression and heart disease. It can also interfere with the body’s ability to lose weight effectively.
