Does Using Hospice Mean Giving Up?

A year ago, when Joyce Grimes was placed at ProMedica Ebeid Hospice Residence, she thought it might mean the end. Years ago, she said goodbye to her husband, Arnie, at the same residence facility. “Everybody took care of him, kept him as comfortable as possible,” she recalls. “He went very peacefully.”

Although Joyce was grateful for the care Arnie received, she hoped for a different journey – at home. After her condition was stabilized, she returned home, where she lives alone now, receiving regular care from Ebeid Hospice’s home care services.

“Hospice is not a place; it’s a philosophy,” says Julie Roberts, Ebeid Hospice. “We meet our patients and families where they are at. Our goal is their goal.”

“It’s never about giving up,” Roberts continues. “It’s never about letting go of hope, but letting people live as well as they can.”

And that’s just what Joyce is doing, with the help of Ebeid Hospice. “I can’t get over the quality of health that they have here,” she said.
