Starting April 4, 2014, The Flower Market’s Garden Grocer will begin hosting monthly “First Fridays” events to discuss good nutrition, hold food demonstrations, provide recipe books and other handouts, and offer health screenings and prizes.
The events will be held the first Friday of each month from 2 – 4 p.m. and feature advice from Chloe Berdan, MS, RD, LD, a clinical dietitian with ProMedica Advocacy and Community Health.
“Since we’re highlighting a different theme each month – such as minority health in April, childhood obesity in September and holiday stress in December – ‘First Fridays’ are a good way to review timely nutritional topics,” Berdan said. “All questions about healthy eating are welcome no matter what the month’s topic, though.”
To continue discussions about each month’s topic with a physician and promote exercise, “First Friday Family Fun Walks” will follow every month from 4 – 4:30 p.m. The informational walks to and from Toledo’s Ottawa Park will be led by Michelle Boose, MD, MPH, a ProMedica Physicians family practitioner and medical director for ProMedica Advocacy and Community Health, or Rob Fredrick, MD, ProMedica senior vice president of Academic Affairs.
Located at 3890 Monroe St. near ProMedica Toledo Hospital, The Flower Market added the Garden Grocer section with produce and other nutritious groceries last year to help improve access to healthy food. The addition is part of ProMedica’s Come to the Table collaborative advocacy initiative to end hunger and address it as a health issue.
