Running is a great way to exercise—and it’s convenient. You can simply lace up your sneakers, step outside, and jog as long as you like.
But it can become tedious, especially if you take the same path each time. Here are some ways to spice up your running routine:
Change up the terrain.
Whether trails, hills, or stairs, a change of environment can help you tackle new challenges. Trail running enhances a dull running path with beautiful scenery. Jogging up and down hills or stairs can help you strengthen new muscles and break up the monotony of a straight, flat road.
Sync your music to your pace.
Research suggests that listening to music with a fast tempo while jogging can help intensify your run. On the other hand, listening to slow music during your cooldown can return your heart rate to resting levels sooner. Create a new playlist for yourself that is timed to how you expect your next run’s intensity to fluctuate, and pace yourself to the music once you hit the pavement.
Listen to something new.
Swap your usual tunes with a podcast to engage your brain in a new way—and possibly distract yourself from the physical work you’re doing.
Run during show time.
If you’re a treadmill runner, plan to run only during the times when your favorite TV shows are on. One study indicated that people who selected their own entertainment while running on the treadmill experienced greater physical performance than those who looked at nature images.
Gamify your run.
Download a smartphone app that features location-based competition and point systems that gamify running, taking your step routine to the next level of fun.
